Site 12: Cape Flattery Battery

Site History and Background

Harbor Defenses of Puget Sound (proposed), 1942
1942 Proposed Defenses

This site, which is approximately 0.5 mile northwest of Waatch Point along the coast, includes two abandoned concrete bunkers and a gravel access road.  The U.S. Army started constructing this coastal defense system in the early 1940s but abandoned the project in 1943 before construction was complete (Marsh, 1996).  The larger of the two concrete bunkers was one of the fire control observation sites, and the smaller bunker was the proposed Meteorological Station (USACE, 1945).  The larger bunker was built at the edge of the ocean cliff.  The smaller one is about 100 feet to the east.  The facility is listed as FUDS property #F10WA0584 (USACE, 2002).
