Site 16: Hobuck Creek Dam

Site History and Background

Hobuck Creek Dam
Hobuck Creek Dam
(Ridolfi, 2005d)

Hobuck Creek Dam was the source of drinking water for the Family Camp and Trailer Court (Radian, 1987).  The dam was built and operated during the same period that the trailer court was active.  The site includes a small wooden dam, a small concrete-block water treatment building, some barrels labeled as "sodium hypochlorite solution," and remnants of water pipes, which are a few hundred feet upstream of the trailer court area.  The dam constitutes a sediment trap and impacts natural hydrology.

Activities to Date

The Makah Environmental Restoration Team performed site inspections in October 2000 and in March and April 2004, and the site was one of 10 sites investigated during the 2004 limited remedial investigation (Ridolfi, 2005d).  One sample of the tar paper found under roofing material was collected and analyzed for asbestos content, and three types of paint were sampled and analyzed for lead content.  Asbestos and lead were not detected above screening levels.

The Makah Environmental Restoration Team discussed dam removal options with the Makah Fisheries department in July 2006. The Makah Fisheries department determined that the benefits of removing the dam outweigh the potential impacts of the removal activities (Lucas, 2006).

Planned Activities

The Tribe considers this site a lower priority (Priority C). The following activities are planned for 2006 to 2010:

  • Continue discussions with Makah Fisheries to plan dam removal activities.
  • Remove abandoned structures.
  • Remove the dam.

Dam Removal: The Makah Environmental Restoration Team will collaborate with Makah Fisheries to develop plans for removing the dams and restoring the natural hydrology of the site.

Building Deconstruction and Removal: The water treatment building will be deconstructed and removed. The deconstruction may involve building structure, foundation, driveway and walkways, undesired parking pavement, and underground and aboveground plumbing and electrical lines. The construction debris will be shipped off site for proper disposal.
